The arrival of the General Motors group in Formula 1 is becoming more certain. Teaming up with Andretti to become the 11th team on the grid, the Detroit giant has officially submitted its application to become a Formula 1 engine supplier.

This is a major announcement as beyond supplying Andretti, in the event that the team led by Michael Andretti was accepted to join the starting grid, the future Cadillac engine could also be equipped in other teams. » We are delighted to announce that the entry of Andretti Cadillac will be powered by a General Motors power unit,” said GM President Mark Reuss. « With our great expertise in engineering and motorsport, we are confident in developing a successful power unit for F1 and positioning Andretti Cadillac. We will race with the best, at the highest level, with passion and integrity, which will help elevate the sport for racing fans worldwide.

“A little over a month ago, Andretti received the green light from the FIA to become the 11th Formula 1 team, granting them the license to race in F1. However, this entry is still pending the decision of the FOM and the ten other teams to accept or reject a new competitor.”

The announcement of the day informs us that General Motors has already started working on a prototype power unit. The company believes that this development work on an F1 engine will help them with the electrification of their future vehicles, hybrid technology, synthetic fuels, and high-energy efficient internal combustion engines.

General Motors is aiming for an entry in 2028, whereas the latest information suggested a joint arrival with Andretti as early as 2025. Does this mean that the American manufacturer is giving itself more time to prepare for its arrival? Does a potential delay in Andretti’s entry into F1 imply that the current teams in F1 are still hesitant to share the limelight with a new entrant?

Many questions remain unanswered after General Motors’ announcement. Regardless, the Detroit giant appears to be ready to do whatever it takes to enter the top category of motorsport.
