Mick Schumacher joins Alpine in WEC starting from 2024
After a year without a Formula 1 seat, Mick Schumacher will be back behind the wheel in 2024. He will be a driver for Alpine in Hypercar, which has also announced its crew for the upcoming WEC season.

After two seasons in Formula 1, Mick Schumacher hadn’t really convinced.
At first, facing a weak Nikita Mazepin, who was a victim of the geopolitical positions of his country, Russia, Mick Schumacher then confronted a tougher teammate: Kevin Magnussen.
If in 2021, no one was able to truly judge Schumacher’s performance against Magnussen, the German struggled. Despite some standout moments and a satisfactory and improving pace, the Haas team had decided, by the end of 2022, not to renew his contract for 2023, opting instead for veteran Nico Hülkenberg.
After a year of development spent at Mercedes, Mick Schumacher will find a full-time seat at Alpine in WEC. A new challenge, that of endurance. In 2024, Alpine will be competing in the Hypercar category, an opportunity for Mick Schumacher to become the figurehead of this ambitious project.
Mick Schumacher happy and eager for this new adventure
For someone whose Formula 1 career didn’t last long, even though it’s not excluded that he might return to it, this opportunity in WEC is a real stepping stone to make a comeback at the highest level behind the wheel of a car.
A new chapter begins for me with Alpine in the FIA WEC Hypercar category. The car is impressive, and I can’t wait to start. I grew up with single-seaters, so driving a car with a closed cockpit and covered wheels is an excellent opportunity to refine my driving skills. Racing has been sorely missed this year. It’s what I love doing since childhood, and it was sometimes hard to see other drivers on the track. Endurance is a new challenge for me, and I am confident that we will share great moments together next year with Alpine,” said the young German driver.
A challenge for Alpine
For Alpine, who is making their comeback in Hypercar in 2024, choosing Mick Schumacher also represents a challenge. Indeed, the German has not officially raced in 2023 and will have to quickly catch up, in a discipline that is still unknown to him. However, Bruno Famin, director of the Alpine Motorsports brand, seems confident about signing Mick Schumacher, also noting that endurance racing does not rely on just one driver: “We are absolutely delighted to have these six drivers and we hope that they will all bring their experience and qualities to the project.”
Alongside Mick Schumacher, Alpine also announced the other 5 drivers who will accompany Alpine in its Hypercar quest. They are Charles Milesi, Matthieu Vaxiviere, Paul-Loup Chatin, Ferdinand Habsburg, and finally, Nicolas Lapierre.
“We wanted drivers who are not only fast and reliable, but also demonstrate a real team spirit and a good sense of racing to represent the Alpine colors in the top category of the World Endurance Championship,” said Bruno Famin.
New cockpit, new championship, and new challenge for Mick Schumacher. In WEC, he will find competition with Alpine, especially with Ferrari’s comeback this year. He will also compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the most prestigious races in the world. As for Alpine, they are making a comeback in Hypercar, a real challenge for the French company.
All of it with two cars: No. 35 and No. 36.
