As the 2023 season has just ended, Pirelli is already looking ahead to 2024. In a statement, the official tire manufacturer of F1 has unveiled the tire selection for the first three Grand Prix of the season. The selection of these tire compounds was made based on the data collected throughout the 2023 season.

Pirelli studies various factors such as the track abrasiveness, the age of the surface, as well as the different weather conditions expected in order to choose among the 5 tire compounds created. Pirelli’s range of F1 tires consists of 5 different hardness levels, from the hard C1 to the softest C5. A soft tire will not last as long as a hard tire, but it provides better performance.

The trains available for Bahrain

For the 2024 season, once again it will be the Bahrain Grand Prix that will host the season opener. In order to inaugurate the season, Pirelli has decided to select the hardest tire compounds. The chosen tires are the same as those for the 2023 edition. The demanding nature of the Sakhir circuit and its track has led Pirelli to select the C1 compound for the hard tires and the C2 compound for the mediums. The soft tires, intended for qualifying, will be of category C3. As a reminder, the C1 is the hardest compound in the range and the C5 is the softest.

Intermediate category in Saudi Arabia

The second round of the season will take place in Saudi Arabia, one week later. For the Djeddah race, Pirelli has chosen intermediate tires. For the race, the hard tires will be classified as C2, the mediums as C3. Lastly, the soft tires will be classified as C4.

The softest tire trains in Australia

The Australian Grand Prix is known for wetter conditions, far from the arid atmosphere of Gulf countries. Therefore, Pirelli will bring its softest tire compounds. The hard tires will be classified as C3, the intermediate tires as C4, and for the soft tires, it will be C5.

The stables and drivers will be able to test all these tire categories between February 21st and 23rd during pre-season testing. For the first time, all the tires will be marked with the FSC logo. This is a certification by the Forest Stewardship Council, ensuring Pirelli’s responsibility throughout the production chain, as well as respect for biodiversity while preserving economic sustainability. The Italian company will thus offer the first competition tires certified by this label.
