Mick Schumacher has returned to an F1 car, for Pirelli tire tests, behind the wheel of the Mercedes W14, at the Magny-Cours circuit. The son of Michael Schumacher, seven-time F1 world champion, no longer competes in the category as of this year.

On the wet track of Nièvre, the German tested the new intermediate tires from the Italian manufacturer. On Tuesday, Mick Schumacher completed 90 laps and set a fastest time of 1:35.542 on the 4.4-kilometer circuit. He was slower with the rain tires with a time of 1:41.962. A second day of testing took place on Wednesday.

A shadow role for Mick Schumacher

The German joined the discipline in 2021, after his title in F2. He was racing for the Haas team with Russian driver Nikita Mazepin as his teammate. He didn’t score any points during his first season, and neither did his team. Mick Schumacher is now competing in his second F1 season, alongside Kevin Magnussen.

But the 2022 season was more difficult for the German driver, who only scored 12 points compared to the Dane’s 25. But most importantly, he caused numerous accidents, costing his cash-strapped team a fortune. Günther Steiner, the director of Haas, has decided to replace him in favor of his fellow countryman, the more experienced Nico Hülkenberg.

The German has been recruited as the third driver by the Mercedes team. Mick Schumacher has been present on numerous occasions this season at different circuits during F1 race weekends. He also tested the winglets on the W14 at Silverstone during the summer. The former number 47 driver will keep this role within the German team next year and will participate in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Alpine’s Hypercar program.
