Teammate duels for the 2023 F1 season: who beat their number 1 enemy?
Some were very close in terms of results, while others were soundly beaten by their team-mates. After a 2023 season outrageously dominated by the Red Bulls, here's a look at the team-mate duels of the ten teams on the grid.

Red Bull – Max Verstappen versus Sergio Perez
22 Grand Prix and 6 Sprints this season, for a total of 26 victories for the Austrian team. 21 wins in races, two thanks to Sergio Perez in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan, the other 19 won by Max Verstappen. Five victories in the Sprints, all achieved with the triple world champion. Red Bull has been on the podium in every race, except for the Singapore Grand Prix.
Qualifications: 20 – 2
Course: 20 – 2
Abandons: 0 – 2
Points: 575 – 285
Mercedes – Lewis Hamilton versus George Russell
For the first time since 2011, the brand with the star did not win a single race in a season. The black cars finished second in the constructors’ championship, with over half the points of Red Bull. However, the team achieved eight podium finishes this season, six of which were thanks to Lewis Hamilton, who finished third in the drivers’ championship, and two with George Russell.
Qualifications: 15 – 7
Course: 11-11
Abandons: 1 – 3
Points: 234 – 175
Scuderia Ferrari – Charles Leclerc against Carlos Sainz
The only team to have beaten Red Bull in a Grand Prix, in Singapore thanks to Carlos Sainz, Frederic Vasseur’s first season at the helm of Ferrari was encouraging. The team secured nine podium finishes, six for Charles Leclerc and three for Sainz. The red team also claimed several pole positions, such as in Baku, Monza, and even in Las Vegas. They finished the season in third place in the constructor standings with 406 points, just three points behind Mercedes.
Qualifications: 14 – 8
Course: 12 – 10
Abandons: 3 – 1
Points: 206 – 200
McLaren – Lando Norris vs Oscar Piastri
The papaya season had started very poorly. The two cars were rarely scoring points. But starting from the British Grand Prix, the developments implemented by Zak Brown’s team allowed McLaren to immediately regain performance.
Behind Alpine and Aston Martin at the beginning of the championship, Norris and Piastri turned the tide and overtook these two teams, finishing the championship with nine podiums, seven with Norris and two thanks to Piastri. The Australian rookie even secured victory in the Sprint race in Qatar.
Qualifications: 14 – 8
Course : 17 – 5
Abandons: 1 – 3
Points: 205 – 97
Aston Martin – Fernando Alonso versus Lance Stroll
The dynamics of the Greens (referring to a team or players) are the opposite of McLaren’s. Aston Martin, and especially Fernando Alonso, have impressed in the first eight races of the season. Six podium finishes for the two-time world champion and a seventh-place finish as the worst result in the Spanish Grand Prix.
Aston Martin experienced two periods without podiums, between the Canadian and Dutch Grands Prix, and then from Zandvoort to Interlagos. Alonso was the only one to carry the team and obtain the team’s eight podiums, as his teammate Lance Stroll was far from matching the performance of the Spanish driver.
Qualifications: 19 – 3
Course: 18 – 4
Abandons: 2 – 3
Points: 206 – 74
Alpine – Pierre Gasly against Esteban Ocon
A season more than disappointing for the ‘French F1 team’. The French squad has regressed significantly compared to 2022. On-track performances far from being up to par, a ‘dilettantism’ criticized by Laurent Rossi, the former team manager, as well as the numerous changes in the team’s organization, have cost Alpine dearly on and off the track. The two podium finishes of the season, Esteban Ocon’s third place in Monaco and a similar result by Pierre Gasly in the Sprint at Spa-Francorchamps and at Zandvoort, are the small rays of sunshine for Alpine in this year 2023.
Qualifications: 14 – 8
Course: 12 – 9
Abandons: 1 – 6
Points: 62 – 58
Williams – Alexander Albon versus Logan Sargeant
For his first season at the helm of the team, James Volwes lifted Williams out of the depths of the grid. The team may have only scored 28 points, 92 less than Alpine, but they finished in seventh place in the constructor’s championship, greatly aided by their leader Alexander Albon, who scored 27 points. Logan Sargeant narrowly avoided a zero-point season in his first year in F1, thanks to his tenth place finish at the Austin Grand Prix, a position he earned after the disqualifications of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc for ‘non-compliant ride height’.
Qualifications: 22–0
Course: 18 – 3
Abandons: 4 – 4
Points: 27 – 1
Scuderia AlphaTauri – Yuki Tsunoda against Nyck de Vries, then Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson
Four drivers in a single season for AlphaTauri. The team started the year with the duo Tsunoda – de Vries. But after only 10 Grand Prix and no points scored, the Dutchman was dismissed and replaced by Daniel Ricciardo from Budapest. At that time, the team had only scored three points thanks to the Japanese driver.
But during the trials of the Dutch Grand Prix, Ricciardo fractures his wrist and makes way for Liam Lawson. The Australian will only return for the Austin Grand Prix. Lawson manages to secure two points for ninth place in Singapore, and Ricciardo earns six points for his season in Mexico. Tsunoda finishes the season with a total of 17 points, which is 14 more than at the beginning of the championship. AlphaTauri finishes eighth in the constructor standings, three points behind Williams.
Qualifications: 16 – 6
Course : 13 – 9
Abandons: 2 – 1
Points: 17 – 8
Alfa Romeo – Valtteri Bottas versus Zhou Guanyu
The last season of Sauber in partnership with Alfa Romeo will not be remembered in Formula 1 for its good results. The team was quickly overtaken by Williams, then surpassed by AlphaTauri, to finish in ninth place in the constructor standings, without being able to bring any hope of performance during the season. The advantage in terms of points and qualifications is in favor of the Finnish driver, however, he did not dominate his teammate outrageously, unlike Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, or Alexander Albon.
Qualifications: 15 – 7
Course: 12 – 9
Abandons: 3 – 3
Points: 10 – 6
Haas – Nico Hülkenberg versus Kevin Magnussen
Haas is the sad last-place team on the grid with only 12 points scored. There was only one improvement made during the season, at the Austin Grand Prix, which didn’t even allow the car to progress. Kevin Magnussen has been better than his teammate in this difficult season for Haas. The German scored six points at the Australian Grand Prix. But Magnussen achieved three top 10 finishes this year.
Qualifications: 15 – 7
Course: 13 – 9
Abandons: 1 – 3
Points: 9 – 3
