The FIA needs to reorganize. Tim Goss, the technical director of the organization, officially left his position one month after the departure of sports director Steve Nielsen. The 60-year-old British engineer was a key figure in the FIA’s organization. The person who left McLaren in 2018 played a very important role in the regulations implemented in 2022.

Tim Goss was also working on the upcoming reform of Formula 1, which will come into effect in 2026. He was one of the key technical figures. We are disappointed to lose someone of Tim’s caliber within the organization, said Nikolas Tombazis following his departure. Tim played a major role in the technical department and always operated at the highest level. We understand that his career is taking a new direction and we support and respect his desire to pursue elsewhere. We wish him good luck in his future endeavors.

Tim Goss is a former McLaren engineer highly respected in the paddock. The Briton worked for the orange team from 1990 to 2018. After leaving McLaren, the 60-year-old man accepted a position within the FIA for five years. “It was an honor to work as the Technical Director of the FIA and contribute to shaping the future of the sport,” Tim Goss revealed. “I am extremely proud and satisfied with the many achievements of the technical department during my time at the FIA. The department has a number of very talented individuals, and I believe the organization is on a solid foundation in terms of technical expertise for the tasks ahead, especially the introduction of the 2026 regulations. I leave with fond memories of my time at the FIA.”

Reorganization in the organizational chart

Faced with the significant departures of Tim Goss and Steve Nielsen, the FIA is undergoing restructuring. In the new reshuffling, Tim Malyon will take on the position of Sports Director. Previously, he was the Director of Safety. For this new role, the FIA stated that Tim Malyon will oversee all sports-related matters, including race direction and the remote operations center in Geneva.

Nikolas Tombazis, the person in charge of single-seaters for the FIA, has acknowledged Tim Malyon’s qualification. The 45-year-old has previously held a similar position as a sporting director within the F1 organization before joining the ranks of the FIA. He has contributed to improving the efficiency of race control with the development of a remote operations center that supports race control on circuits. Additionally, Tim Malyon has worked for three teams prior to 2019: Red Bull, Sauber, and BMW.

Tim has a rich experience and expertise in high-level motorsport, praised Nikolas Tombazis. He will play a major role as we continue to bring rigor to our sports and regulatory practices and procedures. He will lead the innovation we have brought to our race control operations. Tim has been instrumental in creating a strong synergy between race control and the ROC with the introduction of new technologies, including artificial intelligence and advanced data analysis and processing systems. He will continue to oversee progress in this field and take the lead in the evolution of FIA’s sporting regulations.

The new sports director eager to start working

Following his new appointment, Tim Malyon has already identified his areas of work. The new sports director is eager to focus on the aspect of regulations. « We have already made significant changes to our race management operations with the support of the ROC, and I am excited to take it to the next level », said the 45-year-old man. « We are also committed to a comprehensive regulatory review of sports issues, and I am looking forward to further concentrating my efforts on these endeavors in the future. »

At the end of the year 2023, the FIA also lost one of its key figures in the person of Christian Bryll. He had been the logistics manager for 10 years.
