Christian Horner is very confident about the Red Bull Powertrains project

Red Bull wants to have its own engine from the 2026 season. While the work accomplished is "exceptional" according to Christian Horner, the team is still counting on the support of Honda until 2025 and Ford from 2026.

Red Bull has embarked on the crazy project of building its own Formula 1 engine starting from the 2022 season. In 2020, Honda announced its withdrawal from the sport at the end of the 2021 season, leaving Red Bull and AlphaTauri without an engine supplier.

The Austrian team did not turn to Renault, Ferrari, or Mercedes to get power units. They decided to buy the intellectual property of Honda engines and rebrand them as Red Bull Powertrains in 2022.

The Japanese engine manufacturer has reversed its decision to leave Formula 1 and continues to partner with Red Bull. Christian Horner’s team has recruited many Honda engine engineers to develop the project of building their own engine for 2026 and the new power unit regulations.

We need to make sure that it works.

In an interview with the media PlanetF1, Christian Horner confirms the good progress of the Red Bull Powertrains project. « It’s underway. There are still 24 months before this engine is bolted to the back of the RB22. It’s not that long in the world of engines, so there is still a lot to do in a very short time. But I am confident that we have the right people and that we can make it happen, » explains the executive director of Red Bull.

« We are not yet going into the details of where we are at, but we are on track. We have a long way to go and a lot of ground to make up. We are in competition with manufacturers who have decades of experience. 30 months ago, this project was still in its infancy. What has been accomplished in 13 months is therefore exceptional », celebrates the Brit.

« Helmut Marko is absolutely right. We have made our commitment and our strategic decision for the future. We need to make sure that it works. I don’t think it’s just about Max. We are all very eager in F1. Everyone wants to be competitive. It’s a colossal and risky endeavor. But we believe it is the right path for the company and for the future », concludes Christian Horner.

Starting from 2026, Red Bull and AlphaTauri will receive engine support from Ford, while Honda will be the supplier for Aston Martin.
