Bernie Ecclestone thinks Max Verstappen would be champion with a different single-seater

At the wheel of his Red Bull, Max Verstappen seems increasingly untouchable. For Bernie Ecclestone, however, the Dutchman would be just as victorious at the wheel of another competitive single-seater.

The greatest Formula 1 drivers win with the best cars, and the best drivers are able to make the strongest cars perform. This is what Max Verstappen demonstrated in 2023.

The Dutchman won 19 out of the 22 races of the season and stood on the podium 21 times. Only Singapore and the Sprint race in Qatar eluded Red Bull and the triple world champion.

This season of ultra domination is added to 2021, where the Dutchman won his first world title in an intense battle, until the last Grand Prix of the season, against Lewis Hamilton. Verstappen had won 11 races that year. The following year, he broke the record of 13 wins in a season, held by Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher.

Max is currently the benchmark in all fields.

Dutch driver is now the third most successful driver in Formula 1 with 54 Grand Prix wins, surpassing Vettel and his 53 victories. Only Lewis Hamilton with his 103 first places and Michael Schumacher with 91 wins are ahead.

For Bernie Ecclestone, the Red Bull driver has reached such a level of performance that he would be capable of winning with another team aiming for victories. They have patiently endured Mercedes’ domination, replacing every weak link one by one, developing the best team, the best design, the best car, and the best driver, Bernie Ecclestone praises in an interview with the German newspaper Bild.

Max is currently the benchmark in all areas. You could also put him in a McLaren, and probably a Ferrari or a Mercedes, and he would still win, claims the former head of FOM.
