Video: When the world’s fastest drone and the Red Bull RB20 race against each other
A Formula 1 car is supposed to be the fastest machine on a racetrack. But what happens when you pit it against one of the drones designed to be the fastest in the world? Red Bull has proposed a race.
A drone is usually used in Formula 1 to shoot videos, especially for shakedowns. There was still one when we arrived in Sakhir last week, the day before the tests, for filming by several teams.
Red Bull has decided to take the world’s fastest drone, piloted in FPV (First Person View), to compete against the RB20, the current world champion.
The result is surprising. The drone can actually accelerate from 0 to 200 km/h faster than an F1 car, in 2 seconds. It then takes 2 seconds as well to go from 200 to 300 km/h. With such performances, the drone on the Silverstone circuit can compete and keep up with a Formula 1 car. It is in the corners that we really see the difficulty of following a Formula 1 car with very different trajectories. However, if Max Verstappen was going all out, the drone was able to keep up with him for the entire lap.
