Official: Carlos Sainz Jr. will be replaced by Ollie Bearman for the remainder of the weekend in Jeddah
Carlos Sainz Jr., the Ferrari driver, will be replaced for the rest of the week by the young reserve driver Ollie Bearman. Scuderia Ferrari has confirmed that their driver is suffering from appendicitis and will undergo surgery later today.
Since the end of yesterday’s day, Carlos Sainz Jr was suffering from stomach aches. The Spanish driver of the Scuderia Ferrari was diagnosed with appendicitis last night. He will undergo an appendectomy operation today.
The Ferrari driver will therefore be absent for the rest of the weekend, even though Free Practice 3 and qualifying are still to come on Friday, as well as the race on Saturday, in this second Formula 1 Grand Prix of the 2024 season.
The reserve driver for Scuderia Ferrari is the young Oliver Bearman, known as Ollie. He is present this week in his role as a driver with Prema in Formula 2, a championship in which he is only in his second season. At 18 years old and with his super license in hand, the British driver will therefore take part in his first Formula 1 Grand Prix.
The reserve driver for Ferrari was until last season Antonio Giovinazzi, who had a lot of experience in Formula 1 after his years at Alfa Romeo. Ollie Bearman has already driven several times for Scuderia Ferrari in private tests and is therefore not new to F1. However, this will be the first time he is engaged at such a high level.
As a reminder, a Formula 1 driver can only start a race once he has completed the qualifications. This appendicitis, although it is a health issue that should not be overlooked, will allow Ferrari to find a solution to still defend its chances in the race with two drivers.
