There will be emotion on the track of the Albert Park circuit during the Australian F1 Grand Prix which will take place on the weekend of 22 to 24 March. For the first time, Jack Doohan, the reserve driver of the Alpine team, will share the track with his father Mick, a true legend of motorcycle racing.

Five-time world champion between 1994 and 1998, Mick Doohan is celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of his first title in the premier 500cc category this year. The Australian will take to the track riding a Honda RC213V, a motorcycle from the manufacturer with which he raced throughout his career.

On his side, the driver who finished 3rd in the 2023 F2 championship will be behind the wheel of a Benetton B200, a single-seater designed in Enstone for the 2000 F1 season. At that time, Giancarlo Fisichella and Alexander Wurz were representing the team now known as Alpine F1 Team. The Benetton B200 achieved its best result with a second place at the Brazilian Grand Prix with the Italian driver at the helm.

In front of their audience, the two Australian drivers will take to the track three times throughout the weekend; Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday before the race.

« I am very excited to announce that my father and I will be on the track at Albert Park during the Australian Grand Prix. I will be driving the Benetton B200 that raced during the 2000 Formula 1 season, while my father will be riding a MotoGP. Both of us will be wearing helmets from 1994. I would like to thank the Australian Grand Prix Corporation and Formula 1 for this incredible opportunity. I can’t wait to see you all at home,” said the 21-year-old driver.

« It is always a real pleasure to take the handlebars of a motorcycle at this type of event,” said Mick Doohan. « It’s been thirty years since my first world title in 1994. I will share the track with my son and it will be a really special moment for both of us. I continue to support Jack and his efforts to achieve his goal of racing in F1. We are both looking forward to putting on a show in front of our fellow Australians at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne during the Grand Prix weekend ».

The appointment is therefore made to hear again the very particular sound of a V10 in a single-seater dating from the turn of the century.
