Jody Scheckter is going to auction off 4 original Formula 1 cars in Monaco, including the 1979 Ferrari 312 T4

Jody Scheckter, Formula 1 world champion in 1979, is auctioning off 7 F1 cars used in Grand Prix races from his private collection, including the victorious Ferrari 312 T4 from 1979. The South African driver won 10 world championship races out of 111 starts during a prominent career spanning from 1972 to 1980. This sale will be organized by RM Sotheby's in Monaco next May.

Aged 74, Scheckter has entered 12 cars from his personal collection for sale at RM Sotheby’s in Monaco on May 11. The highlight of this auction is his Ferrari 312 T4 from 1979 with ground effects – the last car to contribute to winning a driver’s title during Enzo Ferrari’s lifetime.

This particular model, chassis number 40, was the fourth of the five 312 T4 built in 1979 but was exclusively used by Jody Scheckter. It won 2 consecutive victories at the Belgian and Monaco Grand Prix.

Scheckter also led a Ferrari 1-2 finish, ahead of his teammate Gilles Villeneuve, in the team’s home race at Monza to secure a double championship for both drivers and constructors.

He bought the three-liter flat-12 motor car from the team in 1982 and it is now estimated to be worth between 5.2 and 6.5 million euros before being sold by the commissioners on the RM Sotheby’s website.

The sale will include a total of 28 different lots, also featuring rare road cars such as a 1962 Aston Martin DB4 estimated at €500,000 and a 1970 De Tomaso Mangusta estimated at €200,000.

Also up for auction, Jody Sheckter will sell the 1971 McLaren M19A on which he made his F1 debut at the 1972 United States Grand Prix, where he finished ninth. This F1 car was also driven by Denny Hulme, Jackie Oliver, Mark Donohue, Peter Revson, and Brian Redman.

Scheckter also sells a 2008 recreation of the famous Tyrrell P34 six-wheeler, a car he used to win the 1976 Swedish GP – the only victory for the car – in addition to achieving four podium finishes. It is a replica, but it is still estimated to be worth over €500,000, excluding sales fees.

The 1977 Wolf WR1 (€500,000), designed by Harvey Postlethwaite, that Scheckter drove to second place in the F1 driver standings, is also featured in this auction alongside a 1973 McLaren M23 (€2 million) and a 1975 Tyrrell 007 (€800,000).

Apart from the F1 cars, the sale also includes two Formula 2 cars (1972 McLaren M21; 1973 Rondel M1) and one Formula 3 car: 1971 Merlyn Mk21.

In total, the 12 lots offered by the “Jody Scheckter” collection are estimated at over 12 million euros.
