Kevin Magnussen deemed responsible for the accident with Yuki Tsunoda also takes 2 penalty points
The FIA found Kevin Magnussen (Haas) responsible for the collision with Yuki Tsunoda. He will receive a 10-second on-track penalty during the race and 2 penalty points for his involvement in the accident on his super license.
The stewards in charge of the penalties, including Nish Shetty, Loïc Bacquelaine, Vitantonio Liuzzi, and Zheng Honghai, were particularly prolific this Sunday after the race, handing out several penalty points. Haas driver Kevin Magnussen leaves China with two additional penalty points. He now has 5 out of a possible 12 before a race suspension. He will also receive a 10-second penalty during the race.
Indeed, the stewards judged that he was responsible for the contact with Yuki Tsunoda, which caused a wheel failure and a puncture on the Racing Bulls and therefore the retirement of the Japanese driver. Kevin Magnussen, on his side, also suffered a puncture, so in addition to an unplanned pit stop, he had to return to the pits a second time to serve his 10-second penalty received during the race.
« The stewards examined the positioning/marshal system data, the video, the timing, the telemetry, the team radio and the onboard video evidence and concluded that car 20 collided with car 22 at turn 6. Car 20 entered the corner too deeply, braked too late and hit car 22 on the exit of the turn. Car 22 had to retire after the collision. We have determined that car 20 was mainly responsible for the collision. » explains the FIA statement.
