Aston Martin has filed a request to review the 10-second penalty and three penalty points on Alonso’s license, which were imposed on him for a collision with Carlos Sainz during the sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix. A meeting of the stewards is scheduled for Friday morning in Miami to assess whether Aston Martin has gathered new and sufficiently relevant evidence to warrant a new hearing on the matter.

Before the Miami Grand Prix, Alonso didn’t want to go into details of the matter, but stated that Aston Martin was seeking important answers. In particular, the Spaniard says they want clarification on why he appears to have been so severely penalized for incidents in the last races.

This refers to the sanction he received for his defensive driving against George Russell on the last lap of the Australian Grand Prix. “Obviously, we have different opinions, but this happens in all sports,” said Alonso at a press conference. “Even when you watch football on TV, depending on the team you support, it’s a yellow card or a red one or not. I think we will always have different opinions as well.”

I think that in China, 99% of people enjoyed the sprint event and the battles, and I think I got the heaviest penalty of the race. So maybe it was a bit confusing there, but we’ll see tomorrow.

And with penalties having been imposed on him both in Australia and in China, Alonso deemed it important for them to get answers as to why certain decisions were made.

« The rules are the rules, and we accept them. Sometimes we agree, sometimes we don’t, but we have to accept it because they [the commissioners] have all the power to make these decisions, and they have a full understanding of the rules. But, as I said, I received the heaviest penalty in the last two events in Australia and China, so it’s good to make sure everything is fine and that nothing else happens.
