Alex Albon believes that Williams is behind compared to the other teams
Alex Albon fears that Williams will fall behind in the race for upgrades compared to other teams, while they are fighting to score points in the race.
The Williams team is convinced it has made progress compared to last year, but it was caught off guard by the step forward made by Haas and Racing Bulls, in leading the chasing pack behind the top five teams in the championship.
The situation of the English team has not been helped by the beginning of the season disrupted by a series of major crashes, which have hindered its ability to focus on upgrades. The FW46 is more versatile than before, making it consistent on certain circuits, which has helped to address weaknesses.
After finding himself behind a Haas, a Racing Bulls, and an Alpine on the grid in Miami, Alex Albon admitted that things were not ideal for Williams. “From one turn to the next, for the most part, it’s better, but there are definitely areas where the rear end is a bit more unstable than last year,” he said.
« Honestly, I think it’s more the fact that Racing Bulls and Haas have taken a significant step forward. We have also taken a step forward, but it’s relative. My weekend in China went really well, we were P13. That’s where we are. It’s frustrating, but it’s not like we don’t know where the performance is. There is performance, if we can unlock it, I believe we can regularly score points. We’re struggling a bit with a lack of upgrades, and the updates have been late since winter testing. We really don’t have any decent developments this year. So, we’re falling behind.
Before the Miami weekend, the team boss, James Vowles, revealed that developments were underway, now that the team had mastered its situation in terms of spare parts. There are no other words to say it: there is potential but we have not realized any of it at all, he said.
Williams as well as Sauber have still not scored any points in six championship races.
