Mercedes is optimistic about the improvements to the car

Mercedes declares that it no longer "zigzags" in its approach to improvements, after accepting that there is no miracle solution to propel its car to the top of the championship.

The German manufacturer is working on a new development direction for its next update package, hoping to offer a better balance for its car in high and low-speed turns.

Mercedes is working on preparing new components for the Canadian Grand Prix next month, but it is possible that some elements may be accelerated for Monaco if they are ready earlier. Lewis Hamilton recently expressed some optimism about possible progress with the changes after trying them in the Mercedes simulator, even though at Imola, he was not satisfied after the race.

After many false hopes over the past two and a half years, where Mercedes had high hopes for improvements that ultimately did not bring long-term performance gains, there seems to be a real sense that things are different this time.

Mercedes continues to make progress

The team boss, Toto Wolff, suggests that this is the result of the team’s acceptance that there is no miracle solution that will transform their pace. Instead, it is more about constant progress.

Translate: « I think what we see in the car now is that these incremental gains we are bringing rather than a miraculous update are putting the car in a better balance window and simply giving it more performance », Wolff explained.

« It is in these things that we gain one tenth or one tenth and a half, and at the same time, the other teams are also progressing. So, we are on a trajectory where we are improving the car. We can see that. It’s never like a stock that rises [in a straight line], it will rise like this [with peaks and valleys]. As long as the direction is right, I feel more confident now.

« Yes, I think we have never had such clear indications as those we had in the last races where we really saw that the car would either be fast in high-speed corners or in low-speed corners, but never both at the same time. This is something that we are now able to slowly correct.

Toto Wolff explained that what was particularly different in Mercedes’ approach now was that it finally had a confirmed direction to follow. There have been zigzags in recent years, and there have been these false hopes, absolutely, he said.

« I think there is one fundamental thing that we haven’t identified as we should have. That’s why there is more confidence right now. But that being said, nothing in this sport is guaranteed. We are where we are, it’s not good enough, you can hear it in my voice, I’m angry. We simply need to do a better job.
