Bruno Famin is going to”cut to the quick” about Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon
The start of the Monaco Grand Prix did not please the Alpine team manager. Just before the red flag due to the huge accident between Les Haas and Sergio Perez, the two Alpines came into contact before the tunnel, causing Esteban Ocon's single-seater to break. The blame was laid at Ocon's door, and a very angry boss on live television.
Alpine’s performance in this Monaco Grand Prix is rather positive considering the French team’s start to the season, with a point brought back by Pierre Gasly, but this point is just the tip of the iceberg. Esteban Ocon retired following an accident he caused with his teammate. A situation that did not sit well with his team principal nor the spectators and fans of the French team.
Bruno Famin was being interviewed during the Monaco Grand Prix, live while the red flag was still in force after the crash of the Haas car and Sergio Perez.
« It’s sad this kind of incident. It’s exactly what we didn’t want to see » he explains to Canal+ during the red flag interruption. Indeed, a few minutes earlier, when the cars were lining up on the starting grid, the Canal+ team asked him how the drivers’ briefing had gone, given the very close starting positions between the two teammates Esteban Ocon (11th) and Pierre Gasly (10th).
The exchanges were constructive as always. We didn’t necessarily agree and we converged on something and we all agree that the goal is to have the best possible result for the team, so we trust them and hope that everything will go well,” he said on the radio before leaving.
However, things did not go that way after all. Esteban Ocon tried to gain an advantage over his teammate at the Portier corner, before the tunnel entrance, but positioned on the inside, Ocon blocked Pierre Gasly against the barriers. The Alpines overlapped, breaking Esteban Ocon’s rear left suspension and thus stopping the Frenchman’s race.
Pierre Gasly, on his side, was able to take off for a fresh start and finally finish 10th.
Esteban Ocon held responsible for the accident
« Esteban’s attack was completely unacceptable and that’s exactly what we didn’t want to see, and we will draw consequences from it,” continues the French director of Alpine. « We are going to take drastic measures,” the French director adds.
Interviewed by Franck Montagny and Julien Fébreau, Bruno Famin even explained that he holds Esteban Ocon responsible for this collision.
« I think it’s pretty clear, I mean if we were fighting for a podium, why not even then, but really in the first lap, at the hairpin, frankly it was not the place to make an attack, leaving zero space for one’s teammate.
