During the second free practice session of the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix this Friday, the McLaren team and Oscar Piastri were warned by the stewards for not following the instructions.

Indeed, Piastri was sanctioned for not following the race director’s instructions regarding the escape route at turn 14. This infraction was deemed a violation of Article 12.2.1 i) of the International Sporting Code and a disregard of the race director’s instructions (item 15, document 4). The stewards saw that Piastri had indeed left the track at turn 14 without touching the orange kerb on the inside and without following the specific instructions given in the race director’s note. However, they also noted that, considering the weather conditions, the driver took reasonable steps to rejoin the track in a safe manner and did not gain an advantage from this action. Therefore, only a warning was issued.

« The stewards heard from the driver of car 81 (Oscar Piastri), the team representative and reviewed videos as well as onboard footage. The driver of car 81 left the track at turn 14, did not touch the orange kerbstone on the inside and did not follow the instructions defined in section 15 of the Event Director’s Instructions. However, the stewards consider that, given the weather conditions, the driver acted reasonably in order to not rejoin the track in a dangerous manner, did not gain a lasting advantage and therefore consider that a warning is appropriate. » details the statement from the race stewards in Montreal.
