Alex Albon to start from pit lane at Spanish Grand Prix
Williams has replaced some of the drivetrain components on Alex Albon's single-seater. He will therefore have to start from the pit lane this afternoon, announces the FIA.

A report from the FIA reveals that Williams has installed a new energy storage system (a storage space for the lithium-ion battery of the power unit, as well as for the control electronics) in Alex Albon’s single-seater for the rest of the competition, during the Parc Fermé period, thus exceeding the allowed limit of two new storages per season. Albon is now on his third, which contravenes Article 28.2 of the Formula 1 Sporting Regulations 2024.
In addition to this new element, the report highlights that Albon is using a new control electronics, also beyond the allowed limit of two new units per season. This is again the third use, in violation of Article 28.2 of the regulations.
The FIA technical delegate, Jo Bauer, noted that powertrain components had been replaced without prior approval from the FIA technical delegate, which is in violation of Article 40.3 of the regulations.
Therefore, Alex Albon will have to start the Spanish Grand Prix this Sunday from the pit lane, in accordance with article 40.9 of the regulations. On Saturday, he qualified in 19th position ahead of his teammate Logan Sargeant. Therefore, it is not a huge loss for Williams.
