Lotus Type 72: the legendary single-seater exhibited in London
The Lotus Type 72, three-time winner of the Formula 1 constructor championship and two-time winner of the driver championship in 1970 and 1972 will be present at the Formula 1 Exhibition in London on August 23rd.
Started in the 1950s, Formula 1 is one of the motorsports whose history has left a lasting impression. The mother of many technical feats, it has seen the birth of many champions.
Over the years, many teams have tried their luck in sports, sometimes resulting in success. This is the case of the Lotus team, competing from 1958 to 1994. Winner of many championships, it is best known for its cars and technological innovations that have forever changed the world of Formula 1.
This year, the team will present its car the Lotus Type 72, used from 1970 to 1975, for the F1 Exhibition 1 in London.
An exhibition out of time
The F1 exhibition had already toured Madrid last year. Known in particular for presenting Romain Grosjean’s Formula 1 car, or at least what was left of it after his accident, this time, it is in London with new pieces of history. Open from August 23, 2024, and located at Excel, London, this exhibition offers fans a unique opportunity to be close to iconic pieces of motorsport. And the exhibition has already announced this Wednesday one of the jewels of Formula 1, the Lotus Type 72.
The winning car
To this day, the Lotus Type 72 is considered one of the best Formula 1 cars of all time. With 39 podiums to its name and 20 races won, the Lotus single-seater was voted the best Grand Prix car of all time by Autosport magazine in 2023. Until Fernando Alonso’s arrival in 2005, the car held the record for the youngest Formula 1 world champion, held by Emerson Fittipaldi.
In the official press release, Clive Chapman, son of Colin Chapman, creator of the famous single-seater, expresses his enthusiasm about the presence of his father’s car at the F1 exhibition. “I am delighted that the Lotus Type 72 is making an appearance at the exhibition so that fans can remember its legacy as one of the greatest race cars in Formula 1 history,” he explains. “It symbolizes what was then a new era of great British racing, and we look forward to seeing it exhibited later this summer.”
In addition to car parts, fans present at the exhibition will have a chance to win tickets to the 2025 British Grand Prix by participating in a car race on the simulators provided.
The entrance tickets for the exhibition are already available for sale.
