The FIA, responsible for enforcing rules in several motorsports, has been the victim of a phishing attack on two email accounts. The FIA manages sensitive information related to its organization, partners, and employees, which has raised numerous concerns, especially among Formula 1 teams, regarding a possible leak of sensitive data.
In an official statement, the organization explained what had happened. Recent incidents following phishing attacks led to unauthorized access to personal data contained in two email accounts belonging to the FIA, they expressed. The FIA has taken all measures to rectify the situation, notably by quickly cutting off illegitimate access once the incidents were identified, and notified the National Commission on Informatics and Liberty (CNIL), as well as the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Transparency.
In its press release, the FIA also wanted to highlight the importance with which it treated the attack. “We take our data protection and information security obligations very seriously, and we continuously review our systems to ensure they are robust, in the context of the evolving cybercrime. The FIA has implemented additional security measures to protect itself against future attacks,” it said.
Despite a quick response, the organization did not wish to communicate more specifically about the details of the attack. This information should be communicated more extensively in the coming days in order to allow employees to know which data is at risk. In the meantime, partner organizations are encouraged to monitor their cybersecurity protocols to protect themselves against possible similar threats.
Note that when Europe is in France, especially with the GDPR, all data that may have been stolen during a cyberattack must be reported to the relevant authorities.
