Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix this weekend, a special Grand Prix as the race was held at home. Beside the Mercedes driver, on the podium were Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, who finished second and third respectively.

This victory not only represents a success on the home circuit of the British driver but also his first victory since 2021. A success that has been enhanced by several records broken.

Some records, sometimes very old…

Lewis Hamilton not only showed that he is still a driver capable of winning Grand Prix races this weekend, but he also reminded the whole world of the legend of motorsport that he still embodies. In total, 9 records were broken by the driver in one day.

This year, Hamilton surpassed the previous record for the most race wins on the same circuit by the same driver. Previously held by Michael Schumacher with eight wins on the French Grand Prix circuit, it is now Lewis Hamilton who holds this position with nine Grand Prix wins on the Silverstone circuit. This success also marks the British driver’s 104th career victory, solidifying his status as the most successful driver in F1 history.

Hamilton was visibly emotional after the race, which took place 945 days after his last victory at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in 2021. After winning four consecutive championships from 2017 to 2020 and finishing second in 2021, Hamilton struggled to be among the top three in races in the previous years. He achieved nine podium finishes in 2022 and six in 2023, after obtaining 17 in the previous season. This new podium adds to an already long list that allows him to achieve the record for the number of podium finishes in Formula 1 with his 199 appearances on the podium, a record previously held by the driver.

In addition to beating Schumacher’s record, Lewis Hamilton has become the oldest driver to win a Formula 1 race in the 21st century, surpassing Kimi Räikkönen. Hamilton was 39 years and six months old when he won at Silverstone, while Räikkönen was 39 years and four days old when he won the United States Grand Prix in 2018. A few months that make all the difference for the Mercedes driver.

… But not only

Although the driver brought back with him a large number of records of which he can be proud, he didn’t stop there as he himself created new ones. Lewis Hamilton is the only known driver to have won a race 17 years after his first race in Formula 1. It is worth noting that he began his career in 2007 with Ron Dennis. This also gives him the record for the time between his first Grand Prix won and his last Grand Prix, as he won the Canadian Grand Prix in 2007, only 6 races after his arrival in Formula 1.

Moreover, Hamilton is the very first driver to win a race after 300 races competed. A new record added to the highest number of seasons with at least one race won. Needless to say, successes are piling up for the British driver.

Records that already belonged to him.

Pilot for many years, Lewis Hamilton has had time to achieve other records during his career. Records that already belong to him, but that have been broken again by himself. This is particularly the case of the number of wins obtained with a single team, which was already 82 with Mercedes for the British driver. He can now add one more to the counter.

Thanks to these records, Lewis Hamilton has shown that he is an essential driver in motorsport. The British driver has managed to surpass records set by legends of the sport, such as Michael Schumacher and Kimi Räikkönen, and has achieved new unprecedented feats. All these successes show that the Mercedes driver, who will join Ferrari next year, still has many great years ahead of him.
