Max Verstappen confirmed that it was likely that he will incur a 10-place grid penalty for the Belgian Grand Prix due to an engine change. This news slightly darkens the Dutchman’s prospects on the Belgian circuit, where he has nevertheless triumphed in the last three editions.

Interviewed on the matter, the Red Bull driver said: “I knew it was going to happen, it’s not a surprise.” However, Verstappen pointed out that the Spa circuit, with its long straights and overtaking opportunities, could be an interesting playground for a comeback. “We’ll see on Sunday how effective it will be,” he added with a smile.

Doubts about the competitiveness of Red Bull

If Max Verstappen is used to shining at Spa, the situation seems different this year. The last races have been more difficult for Red Bull, and the Dutch driver admits that the goal could be to limit the damage rather than aiming for victory. “With 10 penalty places, I wouldn’t say we have a chance to win,” he conceded.

The presence of new areas of asphalt coating adds an additional unknown to this weekend. « We have to see how the tires react to this », explained Verstappen, who also stresses the importance of the weather, with precipitation expected for this Friday and Saturday.

A challenge to be met at Spa

Despite the difficulties, Verstappen remains optimistic. “A race can always be disrupted by moments,” he recalls. The Dutchman, who has already won races from distant grid positions at Spa, does not set limits for himself. “I hope for a bit better than 8th place, but we will see,” he concluded, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding this weekend at Red Bull.
