Formula 1 standings after the Belgian Grand Prix
This year's Formula 1 championship is very tight, unlike last year when Max Verstappen dominated the other drivers. McLaren is particularly competitive with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, while Red Bull is showing signs of weakness. Several teams and drivers are vying for the top spots.
Last year, Max Verstappen dominated the driver’s championship with a victory already secured halfway through the year. This year, the outcome of the F1 driver and constructor championships remains uncertain. McLaren has regained its competitiveness, while Red Bull shows signs of weakness.

Competitive McLarens
McLaren has recovered well this season after a difficult start in 2023. This time, the team’s cars are extremely performing, as are their two drivers. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri both won their first Grand Prix this year. Lando Norris is currently in second place in the driver’s championship with 199 points, while Oscar Piastri is fourth with 167 points, having overtaken Carlos Sainz at the Belgian Grand Prix. McLaren is second in the constructor’s championship, just 43 points behind the leader.
Some Red Bulls losing performance
Red Bull, which dominated the driver and constructor championships last year, seems to have fallen behind this season. Sergio Pérez and Max Verstappen have experienced several retirements, preventing Red Bull from distancing themselves sufficiently from other teams to secure their position. This uncertainty casts doubt on the final winners of the two championships. Sergio Pérez, in particular, is at risk of losing his place at Red Bull due to his disappointing performances this season. Both drivers have reported various technical issues with their car, while McLaren seems superior in terms of performance. It will be necessary to wait until the end of the season to know for sure, but for now, Red Bull and Max Verstappen are not assured of retaining their leading position at the end of this season.
A very tight championship
For the first time in several years, after Red Bull’s domination over the last three seasons, the championship is very tight. Four teams have exceeded 200 points in the constructors’ standings, with only 142 points difference between the first and the fourth. In the drivers’ standings, eight drivers have surpassed 100 points, while Max Verstappen is the only one to have crossed the 200-point mark. Lando Norris closely follows him with 199 points. With a 78-point gap behind Max Verstappen, Lando Norris still has many chances to catch up. The competition remains open and each race can potentially shake up the current standings. The 2024 season is one of those particular seasons where nothing is decided yet.
