With Sainz signing for Williams, Théo Pourchaire moves closer to the Audi F1 project
The announcement that Carlos Sainz will be joining the Williams team in 2025 and possibly beyond opens up a number of opportunities for drivers, starting with Frenchman Théo Pourchaire, who is now among those most likely to join Audi.

Another Frenchman on the starting grid in 2025? After Pierre Gasly’s contract extension at Alpine and Esteban Ocon’s arrival at Haas, Théo Pourchaire could become the third French driver on the starting grid in 2025. Making a comeback at McLaren in IndyCar during the race in Toronto, replacing the injured American Alexander Rossi, the Grasse native is gaining experience in a competitive discipline and delivering promising performances. These results could give him a chance to debut in Formula 1, as explained by Alessandro Alunni Bravi, the team principal of Sauber.
« Zak Brown contacted us, and there was this opportunity in IndyCar with McLaren which, I think, is the best option for him for the future, for various reasons. First of all, IndyCar is, along with Formula 1, the pinnacle of single-seater motor racing, with experienced drivers and an extremely competitive field. It is the second championship in terms of performance level and variety of circuits. I believe it is a very complete environment for a driver.
With 91 points scored, last year’s Formula 2 world champion ranks 25th in the championship, despite incomplete participation in the season’s races. His successful debut, particularly with a 10th place in Detroit, is attracting attention not only across the Atlantic but also in the world of Formula 1. Rumors of his arrival at the Hinwil team are growing stronger.
An opportunity favored by the transfer of Carlos Sainz
The announcement on Monday of Carlos Sainz’s transfer to Ferrari increases Pourchaire’s chances of joining Audi. Sainz being out of the running for a seat within the German manufacturer, the Frenchman finds himself in a favorable position. As a member of the Sauber Academy for several years, Pourchaire knows the team’s personnel well, a significant asset in negotiations. He has recently expressed his desire to join Formula 1, ideally with Sauber.
« Regarding F1, if it’s with Sauber, as I am still under contract with them, they have helped me throughout my career in Formula 2 in particular, they have priority. So if they want me, of course I will not say no. »
Many candidates for a single seat.
Unfortunately, Frédéric Vasseur’s departure from Alfa Romeo 18 months ago, with whom Pourchaire had a very good relationship, did not allow him to secure a seat this year. In 2025, the situation could be similar since Sauber will change its name to become Audi, with a new structure and a different project. His distance from Formula 1 could also be a disadvantage, especially since he is said to be comfortable in the American championship.
He also faces serious competition, particularly from Valterri Bottas, the current Sauber driver, who could be renewed. Mick Schumacher, with the prospect of a 100% German duo in a German team, is also a serious candidate. Finally, Zhou and Sargeant are options being considered, although their chances of obtaining a seat next year are currently quite slim.
Pourchaire will therefore have to continue to distinguish himself in IndyCar to attract the attention of the future Audi team and make his dream of becoming a Formula 1 driver come true.
