Oscar Piastri won the Hungarian Grand Prix with fractured ribs
McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has revealed that he suffered a rib fracture in July. While the reason was not given, the date of the X-ray suggests that the accident took place at Silverstone.
Australian driver Oscar Piastri, who races for McLaren, has announced that he suffered a rib fracture during the first half of the Formula 1 season. He shared the news on social media, including by posting images of his X-rays where the fracture is clearly visible.
Even if the circumstances have not been revealed, the X-ray dates from July 8, 2024, the day after the British Grand Prix. This information suggests that it was during the event weekend that he got injured. In addition, injuries of this magnitude usually take several weeks or even months to heal, which means he may have won his first Grand Prix in discomfort. With only two weeks between the two races, the Hungarian Grand Prix did not take place under the best conditions.
However, the Australian managed to win the race despite these conditions. He also achieved fourth place in the Grand Prix at the Silverstone circuit. As the summer break comes to an end, Oscar Piastri is in fourth place in the drivers’ championship, with four podiums to his name this season.
A similar situation had also occurred last year with Daniel Ricciardo, replaced by Liam Lawson during several Grand Prix races. During Free Practice at Zandvoort, the Racing Bulls driver had an accident, causing a fracture in one of the bones in his hand. He returned five races later.
