Pierre Gasly on Charles Leclerc’s victory: “It’s the good news of the day”

Pierre Gasly finished the Italian Grand Prix more than a lap behind the winner, his friend Charles Leclerc. While the Alpine driver was delighted for the Ferrari driver, he found his race very long in the bucket of the A524, unable to turn without overheating his tires.

Pierre Gasly experienced a “very very very very long” race, but while nothing went as planned for the Alpine team, the French driver is happy about his friend Charles Leclerc’s victory.

The Alpine suffered from brake issues, which had major consequences on overheating and therefore tire wear, especially on the rear tires. The one-stop strategy seemed faster but would have worn out the Alpine’s tires too much; however, the one-stop strategy didn’t work either.

« We had several strategies, but unfortunately today I think the two-stop strategy was not the right one, we ended up too far from the points. It was really, well, I mean it was very very very long. Very difficult with brake problems. In qualifying, it’s still the case, I couldn’t brake. In the first and second chicanes, we overheat the rear tires a lot. It’s just way too long. » he explained to Canal+ microphone.

« It’s disappointing, I have to say that I thought we would clearly be able to be in the game, at least getting a little closer to what we were in qualifying, but in the end it was the opposite. I think there is a lot of work to do before Baku. »

Pierre Gasly was also surprised by his friend’s victory at Ferrari: « I didn’t necessarily know, I thought he was going to make two stops too when I saw the McLarens stopping. So no, it’s really great for him. I asked him before the race about his feelings. He was quite confident about having a good race.

The French driver also praised Ferrari’s victory, especially at the iconic Monza circuit, which remains a special moment for the Italian team. “Ferrari winning at Monza is always incredible. It’s not their first victory either, so it’s the good news of the day,” Gasly concluded by acknowledging that this Ferrari victory is a landmark moment, especially when it occurs on Italian soil, further fueling the enthusiasm of the tifosi.
