The official announcement took place during a press conference held this Tuesday, September 10, 12 pm: the famous engineer Adrian Newey will join Aston Martin next season, after being courted by several Formula 1 teams. This transfer is a real masterstroke on the part of Lawrence Stroll, the owner of the team, who had targeted the Briton since the announcement of his departure from Red Bull.

« Adrian Newey joins us as a shareholder and team principal of the Aston Martin Formula One Team. » Lawrence Stroll was confirmed during Tuesday’s press conference.

Throughout the season, Ferrari and Aston Martin fought for Newey, but in the end, the Silverstone-based team won the race to sign the revered designer. Concerned about a bidding war with Aston Martin, Ferrari chose to give up signing the technical director, much to the regret of Lewis Hamilton.

An XXL offer for a genius engineer

It must be said that Aston Martin made a particularly generous offer to Newey, with a contract of 30 million pounds per year for five years, or about 180 million euros. However, be aware that part of this amount would be paid in the form of shares in the Aston Martin F1 team. What finally convinced the technical director was the team’s commitment to a 100% Honda engine for 2026.

Adrian Newey’s involvement with Aston Martin F1 would not be his first collaboration with the Gaydon brand, as he participated in the design of the Valkyrie hypercar and the Valhalla supercar, born as joint projects between Red Bull and Aston Martin.

Still in position at Red Bull, the British engineer will be able to join Aston Martin without a real break in his activity, thanks to a more flexible gardening period than usual.

The official announcement took as much time because of an agreement between Red Bull and Adrian Newey, preventing the technical director from communicating on information other than those related to his current team, until September.

If Adrian Newey is so much in demand by the teams, it is because between 1992 and 2023, his cars have brought back no less than 13 constructors’ titles (Williams, McLaren, Red Bull) and 12 drivers’ titles (Mansell, Prost, Hill, Villeneuve, Häkkinen, Vettel, Verstappen), thus shaping the history of the sport.

With this new recruit, Aston Martin is therefore achieving a real masterstroke while struggling this season, fifth in the championship with 74 points.
