Already 18th on the grid in Baku, Pierre Gasly once again started from this position on the starting grid of the Singapore Grand Prix. Behind the wheel of an Alpine that seems to struggle regardless of the circuit type, the French team had planned a different strategy for their driver by having him make a very late pit stop so he could finish the race on soft tires and move up in the hierarchy. In a race where no safety car intervened, the gamble did not pay off.

« The goal of this strategy was to switch to soft tires for the end of the race and also to block others so that Esteban (Ocon) could come back. We tried but unfortunately it didn’t work out,” commented a dejected Gasly after this latest underperformance.

« Basically the problem is that we are just too slow. We end up trying things that are… I don’t know how much time we were wasting in mediums but I think in the end it was four seconds per lap.

Finally 17th under the checkered flag, Gasly intends to find answers with his team in a season where the races follow one another and look alike for Alpine.

« I don’t really have the words to describe what I feel because these are things that must be seen internally. But the problem is fundamentally that we are far too slow,” the native of Rouen concluded.

In the championship, Gasly is in 15th place with just eight points and his team is in 9th place among constructors.
