These are the first penalty points received by Oscar Piastri. The McLaren driver was deemed responsible for his accident with Liam Lawson during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix this Sunday. He received a 10-second penalty to add to his race time but also received 2 penalty points on his super license (2 in 12 months and even since the beginning of his F1 career).

The FIA estimated that Oscar Piastri did not respect article 2 d) of chapter L.IV of the International sporting code which specifies that: « causing a collision, repeated serious errors, or showing a lack of control over the car (such as going off track) will be reported to the Sporting Commissioners and may result in penalties up to disqualification of any driver involved.

While the conditions were difficult and the track was wet, Oscar Piastri failed to avoid Liam Lawson in front of him while trying to overtake him, causing the Racing Bulls to spin.

« Car 81 was trying to overtake car 30 on the inside of turn 1. The driver of car 81 did not reach the required point according to the driving guidelines to be entitled to space on the inside. A collision occurred, and the stewards determined that PIA was entirely responsible for the incident. » explains the FIA.

As a result, the FIA, represented by the race stewards, have decided to penalize Piastri.
