Ben Sulayem to F1 drivers: « It’s none of their business »
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem strongly responds to criticisms from F1 drivers at the Qatar Grand Prix. In the face of an open letter from the GPDA demanding more transparency, he states that the FIA's management is not their concern.
The president of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, is facing increasing criticism from Formula 1 drivers, especially regarding the transparency of the organization. His response? A categorical rejection of their concerns, stating that the management of the governing body is not their concern.
In an interview given to Autosport before the Qatar Grand Prix, Ben Sulayem responded directly to the concerns expressed by the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA). The latter had sent an open letter asking for more transparency on the use of fines and a more respectful treatment of the drivers.
Interviewed about the pilots’ demand, the president of the FIA stated unequivocally: « It’s not their business. Sorry ». « With all due respect to them, I am myself a pilot. I respect the pilots. Let them focus on what they do best: racing. »
To answer questions about the use of funds from fines, Ben Sulayem nevertheless provided some figures. « You want to know how much we have invested in amateur sports? I will tell you, 10.3 million euros last year. I think it’s a substantial amount. And in 2024, we are already over 10 million. All this in karting and basic car racing. »
These investments are spread across several areas: the development of motor sport in 85 countries, the funding of 70 ongoing safety projects for 2.7 million euros, and 1.9 million euros dedicated to operational security and medical costs during FIA World Championships.
Cascade departures…
The recent resignation of race director Niels Wittich with three races left in the season has also raised questions. Here again, Ben Sulayem stood firm. Do we need to give them explanations? When something changes in the teams, do they inform us? No. We have our rules, we follow them. We do not follow someone else’s rules. It’s as simple as that.
In response to criticism of the departures within the FIA, the president emphasized the recruitment that has been done. « 64 employees joined us in 2023, and 92 in 2024. » He also dismissed accusations of chaos within the organization. « I am very optimistic about the FIA. I am so satisfied with our current position. I only see positive aspects. »
As for external critics, Ben Sulayem adopts a detached stance. I live rent-free in their heads… It’s a nice apartment they’re giving me there, he quips. He maintains his position. Whatever needs to be done to improve the FIA’s position, I will do it. And let them talk about whatever they want.
This situation highlights the growing tensions between the FIA management and the drivers, even as the sport is experiencing an unprecedented period of growth. Ben Sulayem’s uncompromising stance could potentially widen the gap between the governing body and its protagonists on the track.
