McLaren sees its F1 championship registration fees increase by 131% for 2025, details team by team
With the 2024 F1 championship over and the final standings confirmed, we now know the costs related to the registration fees for the 2025 F1 championship. While Red Bull is the winner in this respect, it is McLaren that sees its budget affected with more than double the fees to pay compared to last year.
Teams must pay an entry fee to participate in the Formula 1 World Championship. It is the FIA, International Automobile Federation, that collects this money to enable the organization of the championship, including funding for the travel expenses of employees, stewards, and everything that governs the entire championship.
The registration fees officially increased last August to follow inflation, by 3.4%, compared to over 6% the previous year. But compared to the 2023 championship, the teams shared the points much more evenly in 2024. Therefore, the registration costs will be much less spectacular for Red Bull but higher for other teams. McLaren will be the one to pay the most to register for the F1 2025 championship.
McLaren pays the champion’s penalty
Concretely, each point scored in 2024 by McLaren, which won the Constructors’ Championship, will cost €7,640 ($8,161). With 666 points registered, McLaren will have to pay €5.71 million in registration fees in the coming days to enter the 2025 F1 Championship. The team, which has moved up 4 positions in the standings compared to last year, will therefore see its registration fees increase astronomically. The papaya team will pay 133% more than the fees for the 2024 championship.
Red Bull will save 37% compared to the 2024 entry fees.
Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes, among the top 4 teams, also see their entry fees increase, but to a lesser extent than McLaren. Ferrari will have to pay 4.66 million euros compared to 3.53 million for Mercedes, representing an increase of 51% for Ferrari and 14% for Mercedes.
However, the team that will benefit the most from its underperformance in 2024 is Red Bull. Last year, the Austrian team had to pay the record entry fee in the championship of nearly 7 million euros. This year, the team sees the amount to be paid reduced by nearly 38% to represent a total of 4.28 million euros.
The Haas team sees a significant increase in its expenses, with €980,769 to be paid, an increase of 43%.
The FIA will earn 23 million euros.
In total, the FIA will accumulate thanks to registration fees the amount of 23.67 million euros as opposed to 22.10 million in 2024. In comparison, the annual budget of an F1 team is limited to around 150 million euros. Therefore, the FIA’s budget in F1 is primarily based on registration fees, but Liberty Media reimburses part of the TV rights to the Federation for an unknown amount and agreement.
Please note that the fees must be paid by this Tuesday, December 10, 2024, as required by the F1 sporting regulations.
The winner of the 2024 World Constructors’ Championship will have to pay a base fee of $680,203 USD, approximately €644,000. In addition, they will be charged $8,161 USD (approximately €7,700) for each point accumulated during this season.
The other competitors will also have to pay a base fee of $680,203, or about €644,000, plus $6,799 (approximately €6,400) for each point they have earned.
These basic fees are due at the time of the application, while the remaining balance must be paid before the 10th of December of the year preceding the one to which the application relates. » details the regulation.
