The boss of the Aston Martin team, Mike Krack, took the time to reflect on the team’s disappointing performance during the 2024 season, admitting they largely missed their targets.

Aston Martin returned to Formula 1 as a factory team in 2021, finishing seventh in the Constructors’ Championship in its first two seasons. Meanwhile, the team’s owner, Lawrence Stroll, has invested heavily in a new factory and the recruitment of key talent.

At the beginning of 2023, these investments seemed to be paying off, with the AMR23 securing six podiums in the first eight races, thanks to Fernando Alonso, two-time world champion, who had joined the team during the winter.

Fifth place in the constructors’ championship

However, after a promising start, the team’s pace has faltered. Aston Martin attempted to regroup and develop a car capable of competing with Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes. But the season ended with a distant fifth place in the championship.

Indeed, after achieving eight podiums and accumulating 280 points in the previous season, Aston Martin did not reach the podium even once this year and only scored 94 points.

When asked about why their latest car did not meet expectations and what needs to change for 2025, Mike Krack said: « Yes, I think a difficult season is coming to an end. We had higher expectations. We started where, realistically, we thought we would be as a team. We wanted to close the gap with the leading teams. But instead, we were caught up by the midfield, with whom we had a substantial gap at the beginning of the year. That’s why we cannot be satisfied. »

Change for 2025

« However, we have also learned lessons on what we need to do differently in the future, and we are working full throttle on next year’s car to make it more competitive than the one we currently have. » Mike Krack also mentioned the recent announcement of Dan Fallows’ departure from his position as technical director, coinciding with the AMR24’s failure to meet expectations.

This comes as Adrian Newey, a legend in F1 design, and Enrico Cardile, former technical director of Ferrari, are preparing to join the team, alongside Andy Cowell, recently appointed CEO replacing Martin Whitmarsh.

« As in many professional sports, the only thing that matters is the result, the performance on the track or on the field », Mike Krack said. « If the performance is not up to par, the structures make changes, and that’s what happened here, quite simply. »

Asked about other possible adjustments before Adrian Newey’s arrival, Mike Krack added: « Yes, I think the arrival of Andy, Enrico, and Adrian requires us to develop a structure, particularly a technical one, that will allow them to perform at their best. We are currently having intensive discussions to define this structure, and I hope it will be ready by their arrival. »

In parallel with these technical changes, Aston Martin will continue with an unchanged driver duo in 2025, with Fernando Alonso having signed a new contract alongside Lance Stroll.
