The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the last meeting of the season, was marked by a war of words between the four-time F1 world champion, Max Verstappen, and Mercedes driver, George Russell.

This tension followed the Qatar Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen received a one-place grid penalty for a minor incident with George Russell during qualifying. The Dutchman was annoyed by the role played by the Mercedes driver in this decision and by his behavior in the stewards’ room.

After Sunday’s race, the Red Bull driver stated that he “lost all respect for George Russell,” a position he maintained during Thursday’s media day in Abu Dhabi. The Briton sharply responded to Max Verstappen, claiming that the latter was unable to handle adversity, while making several references to his handling of the 2021 title battle against Lewis Hamilton.

Since then, Max Verstappen has hinted at a possible reconciliation with George Russell, expressing confidence that we will sort things out.

Daniel Ricciardo gives his opinion

When asked about the subject, Daniel Ricciardo, who left F1 after the Singapore Grand Prix this season, shared his perspective during an interview for The Red Flags podcast. He stated: « It’s great television. It’s the first time I’ve seen George angry. »

When asked if it was a good idea to quarrel with the reigning world champion, Ricciardo added: « Not at the moment. The kid [Verstappen] is on all fronts. I think it’s a difficult fight to win. »

What if the Australian returned to F1?

Daniel Ricciardo has categorically ruled out a return to F1, despite possible interest from Cadillac. The 11th F1 team in 2026 is starting to consider its driver duo, and several names have emerged, including that of the Australian.

Rumors indicate that Colton Herta is the frontrunner. Additionally, Cadillac might opt for an experienced driver, with names like Daniel Ricciardo, Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen, or potentially Sergio Perez available on the market.

However, the former Red Bull driver seems to be definitely retired from F1. During a brief exchange with a fan, Ricciardo was asked about Cadillac and he replied: « No, it’s over for me. »
