The career of Sergio Perez in F1 came to an abrupt end at the close of the 2024 season when Red Bull decided to remove him in favor of Liam Lawson, following a long series of underperformances.

These poor performances contributed to the loss of the 2024 constructors’ title for Red Bull, despite Max Verstappen’s fourth consecutive title behind the wheel of the other RB20. The team ultimately chose not to honor the two-year contract extension for the Mexican, signed in the summer of 2024.

Six months’ break to bounce back better?

In his first public comments since the agreement reached in December 2024, which sidelines him for the 2025 season, Sergio Perez stated that things will come in due time regarding his future in motorsport.

« In the next six months, I will make a decision about the future of my career », added Sergio Perez, speaking at the Feria de León event in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. « I am completely happy, and I will return to Formula 1 if that’s what makes me the happiest. »

Throughout the end of the 2024 season, Sergio Perez had insisted that he would honor his part of the contract with Red Bull, a strategy to ensure financial compensation after the interruption of his contract.

He also expressed his pride in never having given up during the races following the now void contract extension. The important thing is that I never gave up, he stated. Every time something difficult happened in my career, better things followed, and that’s because I never gave up.

« I am very excited for what lies ahead this year, and I am very calm and happy. I am thoroughly enjoying my children, my family, my friends. I will finally travel, as in recent years, I have traveled the world without truly discovering it. »

Red Bull has previously indicated that Sergio Perez « will remain involved with the brand and the team » in an off-track role, according to boss Christian Horner. However, this collaboration still seems unclear, as Sergio Perez was not wearing the team’s attire during the León event.

If Sergio Perez does not manage to return to F1 by 2026, he will end his career in the category with six wins and three pole positions in 281 starts.
