The former engineering pillar of Haas, Gary Gannon, has been recruited by Aston Martin in anticipation of the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Gary Gannon left his position at Haas at the end of the 2024 F1 season, concluding his tenure alongside Nico Hülkenberg, whom he had been race engineer for since the beginning of 2023. Prior to that, he had served in this role for Mick Schumacher during the German driver’s two seasons at Haas, as well as for Romain Grosjean, whom he had accompanied since the American team’s inception in 2015.

A transfer to Aston Martin

Although Gary Gannon started working for Aston Martin this week, it has not yet been confirmed whether he will take on the role of race engineer for Lance Stroll or Fernando Alonso for the 2025 season.

In 2024, Ben Michell was the race engineer for Lance Stroll, working with the Canadian since 2021, while Fernando Alonso collaborated with Chris Cronin. The latter had previously held the same position with the Spaniard’s predecessors at Aston Martin, notably Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Perez, under the team’s previous names (Force India and Racing Point).

A spokesperson for Aston Martin confirmed the arrival of Gary Gannon in the engineering team, but clarified that it remains to be determined with which driver he will work. This recruitment comes a year before Aston Martin’s transition to Honda power units, when the team will become the official partner of the Japanese manufacturer and cease to be a customer of Mercedes.

Gary Gannon’s past experience could prove valuable for this transition, as he worked for 10 years as a development engineer for Honda in the now-defunct American CART and American Le Mans Series. Before joining Haas, he also held a position with the Marussia team in F1.

The arrival of Gary Gannon is the latest in the reorganization of the Aston Martin team for 2025. Last week, it was announced that Andy Cowell, the team’s managing director, would also take on the role of team principal. Mike Krack, who held this position for three years, has been appointed to the new role of director of field operations.
