Aston Martin’s new boss reorganizes the company before the start of the 2025 season

The new Aston Martin team director, Andy Cowell, has implemented an important structural reorganization in preparation for the 2025 F1 season.

Changes within the workforce

Last week, Aston Martin announced that Andy Cowell would immediately take on the role of team principal, in addition to his position as managing director. The 55-year-old Briton succeeds Mike Krack, who has been reassigned to a new on-track position focused on performance.

Tom McCullough, who previously led track operations as the performance director, will take on a role within the expanded group. Aston Martin described these changes as an initiative aimed at establishing a more horizontal leadership structure.

These adjustments come after Aston Martin finished fifth in the Constructors’ Championship for the second consecutive year. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll scored only 94 points, compared to 280 in 2023, a season where the team had started as the main challenger to Red Bull.

Andy Cowell, former chief engineer of F1 engines at Mercedes during the V6 hybrid era, explained that these changes resulted from several months of evaluating the team’s performance and working methods. These changes aim to improve organizational clarity and the racing car’s performance, said Andy Cowell in an interview on Aston Martin’s official website.

This is why we have decided to develop the Aerodynamics, Engineering, and Performance departments into distinct teams dedicated to on-track activities and the AMR tech campus.

« The team on track will be led by Mike [Krack], who becomes director of track operations, and the other will be led by Enrico [Cardile], who holds the position of technical director, both reporting directly to me », he explains.

« This reorganization will allow Mike’s team to focus on optimizing performance at each Grand Prix, while Enrico’s team will dedicate itself to the complex challenge of designing a new race car. »

Building a Championship Team: Aston Martin’s Ultimate Goal

Aston Martin harbors big ambitions and aims to become a title contender in the coming years. The team hopes to capitalize on the new era of engine and design regulations set for 2026.

The team’s owner, Lawrence Stroll, has invested heavily in the project, notably with the construction of a brand-new campus in Silverstone, inaugurated in 2023. An ultramodern wind tunnel is expected to be operational by 2026, and Aston Martin has secured Honda as its exclusive engine supplier from that same year.

Furthermore, the legendary designer Adrian Newey will officially join the team in March as the main technical partner, while Enrico Cardile, former head of chassis at Ferrari, will take up the position of technical director.

« Building a team capable of winning the world championship is our North Star. Everything we discuss relates to what it takes to achieve this vision », stated Andy Cowell.

« My role is to determine which organization is best suited to achieve this vision: do we have the right structure? The right people in the right places? The right infrastructure? Is everyone working in the same direction as a cohesive unit? »

« I set the overall objectives for the leadership team and work with them to establish the path to achieve these objectives, which will lead us to where we want to be. I ensure that we prioritize the right things and work in the right order. »
