Russell under pressure with the arrival of young Antonelli
At just 18 years old, Kimi Antonelli joins Mercedes for his first F1 season, alongside George Russell. Additional pressure for the Briton, now the leader at Mercedes.

Next month, the Mercedes team will welcome a new talent to its ranks: **Kimi Antonelli**. This name is one to get used to, as it’s likely to make waves very soon. At just 18 years old, the Italian already has an impressive CV: champion in karting, success in F4, domination in FREC… A true powerhouse, shaped by Mercedes’ junior program for years. His rapid progression is reminiscent of the greats, and it’s no coincidence that the German team has entrusted him with the seat left vacant by Lewis Hamilton, who has moved to Ferrari.
Russell already under pressure?
During an interview with Sport.de, George Russell expressed his admiration for the raw talent of the young driver: “When I think of myself at 18, I don’t feel any faster today.” Russell, who has experienced being the newcomer eager to prove himself, especially against Hamilton, knows very well what that entails. Antonelli arrives with immense motivation ready to explode. It’s hard not to see the Italian driver as a potential phenomenon. His ability to adapt to all the categories he has passed through, his natural speed, and his composure make him a serious candidate to compete with Russell from his very first season. And the Brit has understood this well: “I think he’s going to keep me on my toes, there’s no doubt about it.”
At 26, Russell no longer has the excuse of being a rookie and must now take on a leadership role at Mercedes. But the pressure doesn’t just come from within. After three difficult seasons where the team lost its benchmark status, the reconquest will inevitably involve an internal psychological and sporting battle. Russell remains calm, asserting that he has the advantage of experience: “I feel more experienced. I know how to manage the pressure of F1 and everything that working with a team of 2,000 people involves.” But in F1, experience isn’t everything, especially when a young driver is ready to do anything to impress.
An explosive new duo at Mercedes
If Russell insists that he and Antonelli will work hand in hand to put Mercedes back in the limelight, he is under no illusions about the ambitions of his new teammate: « You should never be naive, especially when the young ones arrive, because I remember when I was that age, and you have a lot of fire in you ». The internal dynamic of Mercedes will be a key element in 2025. An ambitious rookie facing a more experienced driver still seeking his first major F1 victory, all within a team dreaming of regaining its former glory. While the collaboration seems promising on paper, the reality on the track could prove to be more complex. To be watched very closely!
