Fernando Alonso: « It’s difficult to make a race unpredictable »
Fernando Alonso predicts a tight but predictable 2025 F1 season. For him, only the weather can now create surprises in an F1 that has become too reliable.

The balance of power has changed significantly between 2023 and 2024. While in 2023, victory slipped from Red Bull’s grasp only once, in 2024 no fewer than four teams have won races: Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes. Yet, at the start of the season, the RB20 was far superior to all other cars. This year, during winter testing, Red Bull did not seem to offer an exceptional car. A good piece of news to maintain uncertainty regarding the championship outcome.
A tighter start to the season than in 2024
« I think it’s more open this year. Last season, it felt like Max [Verstappen] had a big advantage during winter testing, and this year, it seems that McLaren might have an advantage. », confides Alonso. This impression was indeed confirmed as in 2024, Red Bull started the season by winning most of the races with apparent ease, securing 4 double podiums in 5 races.
The development of the single-seater during the season had not kept up, and Red Bull Racing faced significant difficulties, but its start was excellent. According to Fernando Alonso, this year it is McLaren’s performances that could stand out, but in a less obvious way, which is promising for the suspense at the start of the season.
A championship less unpredictable than before
However, Fernando Alonso qualifies his remarks, if more teams can compete for victories during the season, the championships are no longer as unpredictable as they once were. Indeed, between technological advancements and the astronomical amounts of data analyzed by the teams, surprises happen far less often. Reliability is very good these days; there are few retirements and few incidents. Strategies are quite defined. Even on Thursday before arriving at the Grand Prix, you know exactly whether it will be one stop, two stops, what tires you will use. Everything is so perfect now that it’s difficult to change or make a race unpredictable. It takes crazy weather or something like that, explains the Aston Martin driver.
This is, incidentally, what happened last year when we witnessed a double podium for Alpine despite the team’s disappointing performances during the rest of the season: the rain had shuffled the deck, and the Brazilian Grand Prix ended in a very surprising way.
In any case, Fernando Alonso is optimistic for the 2025 season: « Let’s hope there will be several winners and that the championship will be tight. Last season was already very good, and I hope this one will be even better. »
