Aston Martin pays (too) slight tribute to Eddie Jordan on its single-seater

This weekend, Aston Martin will be sporting a design in tribute to Eddie Jordan, the founder of the Jordan Grand Prix team, who passed away on March 20 at the age of 76. The team will proudly wear motifs inspired by the Jordan 191, even though it was Eddie Jordan himself who set up the structure 45 years ago that is now Aston Martin.

Eddie Jordan was pure charisma, a passionate individual who energized the paddocks from 1991 to 2004. His team, Jordan Grand Prix, saw legends like Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill, and Heinz-Harald Frentzen. In tribute to this man who contributed so much to the sport, Aston Martin, the distant heir of Jordan, has decided to feature a shamrock (Irish clover) on the rear wing of its cars in Shanghai.

A way to recall the very first F1 of the team, the Jordan 191, which proudly displayed this symbol. Jordan’s family confirmed his passing in a statement: « EJ brought an abundance of charisma, energy, and Irish charm wherever he went. We all have a huge void without his presence. »

Jordan 191, a legendary car

Let’s talk a bit about the Jordan 191. Designed by Gary Anderson, it is considered one of the most beautiful F1 cars ever created. Its green and blue livery, its sleek design, its distinctive clover on the cockpit… everything about it exuded class.

It was with this single-seater that a certain Michael Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion started his incredible career with Jordan.

Today, Aston Martin draws inspiration from this iconic model to pay tribute to Eddie Jordan, with a strong nod to the history of his team. Let’s honor a true legend of our sport and team. Eddie Jordan’s name will proudly appear on our car this weekend, the team declared on their social media.

The history of Jordan GP didn’t end in 2005. After being sold to the Midland group, the team changed names several times: Spyker in 2007, Force India in 2008, Racing Point in 2019, before becoming Aston Martin in 2021.

Despite these transformations, the soul of Jordan GP has remained very present in the paddock. The audacious spirit, the desire to fight against the big teams, and that touch of madness brought by Eddie Jordan, all of this still lives on today, and that’s precisely why Aston Martin wanted to pay him a heartfelt tribute.

Lawrence Stroll, executive chairman of Aston Martin, spoke about the passing of his friend: « Eddie Jordan was a true racer, a great leader, and one of the greatest characters in our sport. He was a friend I had known for over thirty years, and I will miss him dearly. »

A tribute to the stature of the man

Eddie Jordan was more than just a team boss. He was an iconic figure in the paddock, always ready to crack a joke or share a juicy anecdote from his years in F1.

Aston Martin has understood this well: this weekend in China, Eddie Jordan will be present in the minds of all those who loved his madness and audacity. As Andy Cowell so aptly said: « His vision laid the foundations for us and he leaves a lasting legacy to the entire motorsport community. »

So, keep your eyes wide open for the Aston Martins this weekend. Because if they race fast, they’ll be driving with the energy of a certain Irishman who left an indelible mark on Formula 1.
