It’s official, Cadillac is joining Formula 1 in 2026! The entry of the American manufacturer, in partnership with Andretti, promises to shake up the grid and bring extra spice to the championship. But who will drive for this new team? One thing is certain: Cadillac wants an experienced driver for its debut, and an American would be a bonus. The options, however, are limited… and that’s where Sergio Perez‘s name keeps coming up.

The rumor heating up the paddock

Until now, Cadillac had been vague about potential drivers, but Mario Andretti turned up the heat in an interview with ESPN Spain. When asked about the subject, the 1978 world champion confirmed the team is targeting an experienced driver: « The second seat will definitely go to an experienced driver who is available, » he said.

Then, when asked specifically about Sergio Perez, he dropped a little scoop: « He is one of the options. That could be an option, of course. » This statement is no small matter. Checo, let go by Red Bull after 2024, is now reportedly on Cadillac‘s shortlist. But does it make sense for him?

With over 250 Grand Prix under his belt and a Monaco GP win, Checo is one of the most experienced available drivers. He’s been through multiple teams, from the tough years at Force India to his rise at Red Bull. For a team like Cadillac that has everything to learn, a driver with this kind of experience would be a huge asset.

On top of that, Perez is already somewhat connected to General Motors, Cadillac’s parent company, having raced with Red Bull-Powertrains powered by Honda — a manufacturer that collaborates with GM on various IndyCar projects. So he already has a foot in the GM world, which could influence the decision.

But the Mexican is in no rush. He’s said he’s taking his time to choose his next project carefully — one that is both strategic and personal: « He hopes to weigh his options carefully and also consider how any future decision will impact his family, » notes ESPN Spain.

A seat up for grabs, but heavy competition

If Cadillac is considering Perez, he’s not the only name in the frame. Andretti made it clear: « There are three realistic candidates. And no, I’m not revealing who they are. » Three names are in contention. In addition to Perez, we can imagine potential options like Valtteri Bottas, now Mercedes’ reserve driver, or Daniel Ricciardo, who was dropped mid-2024 by Racing Bulls. And of course, Cadillac would love to field an American driver.

The final decision will take time, but one thing’s clear: Cadillac wants to make a strong entrance into F1. And if Perez chooses to take on the challenge, we may soon see him embark on a bold new American adventure.

To be continued…
