Verstappen springs a surprise in qualifying
Max Verstappen's surprising pole position performance, challenging McLaren's supremacy in Q3.

Max Verstappen created a surprise by securing pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix, surpassing McLaren, which had been dominating since the beginning of the weekend. This unexpected performance showcases the talent of the Dutch driver and the ingenuity of the Red Bull team.
« Until now, I haven’t been able to find and exploit the car’s full potential, Verstappen admitted, frustrated after qualifying. However, he managed to refocus. He then stated: « The last lap was a total commitment, we took all the risks. » The Dutch driver also admitted that this pole position had a special flavor, as he was lagging behind in the first two races of the season.
Behind the Scenes of the Performance
Friday was indeed a complicated day for Red Bull, which struggled with delicate setups. However, the engineers worked tirelessly throughout the following night. They notably adjusted the aerodynamics by reducing the wing level, a risky gamble that paid off. Verstappen, for his part, managed to adapt and exploit these changes, delivering an exceptional final sector that allowed him to narrowly surpass Lando Norris.
This performance is all the more remarkable as McLaren seemed destined for a double. The British team has been impressing since the start of the season, largely dominating the entire field. They seem to have found the right balance on the complete and demanding Suzuka track. Yet, Verstappen emerged out of nowhere, defying all predictions.
Fernando Alonso, a veteran of the paddock, did not fail to salute the performance of the Red Bull driver, calling him the best benchmark for all his competitors.
The challenges ahead for Verstappen
« With a good start or not, the race will be complicated anyway », warned Verstappen, aware of the challenges ahead. The fight for victory promises to be intense. Verstappen will have to be wary of Lando Norris, who will be eager to redeem himself after this disappointing « qualification ».
Even if McLaren theoretically has the fastest car, Verstappen’s pole position and the problems faced by his competitors make the race outcome particularly uncertain. Tire preparation, execution, and sensitivity of settings will be crucial elements for victory. The uncertain weather conditions, with forecasts of rain, could also disrupt this race. An advantage for the four-time world champion will be to benefit from clean air at the front of the race, with little or no dirty air.
In this context, the challenge for Verstappen will be significant. The Dutch champion will attempt to replicate his performance and secure a victory at the Suzuka circuit, where he has already won the last three editions of the Grand Prix.
