F1 rankings after the Spanish Grand Prix: Piastri and Norris soar, Ferrari progresses and Red Bull sinks
With an eighth consecutive podium finish and a second hat trick, Oscar Piastri asserted himself as championship leader ahead of team-mate Lando Norris. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, held back by excessive pride, loses touch with the McLarens. A look back at the developments in the drivers' and constructors' championships after the ninth round in Spain.

Driver standings: McLaren on a cloud
Oscar Piastri is having an impressive start to the season and is still leading the championship with 186 points, 10 points ahead of his teammate Lando Norris (176 points). Consistent, fast, and error-free, Piastri and Norris are the strong men of the moment, also confirming the very good form of the British team.
Verstappen struggling
Still in third place with 137 points, Max Verstappen now has a significant gap of 39 points behind Piastri. Accustomed to dominating previous seasons unchallenged, the Dutchman is facing this year the rise of McLaren and the relative decline of Red Bull. This setback puts a clear halt to his quest for a fifth consecutive title, revealing mood swings and a lot of frustration on the track, which are not worthy of a reigning world champion.
The rest of the set
Behind them, Russell, Leclerc, and Hamilton are fiercely contesting the positions, occupying fourth, fifth, and sixth place in the standings, respectively. Further back, now trailing, Kimi Antonelli and Albon (both empty-handed in Spain) are at a standstill, while Isack Hadjar now finds himself in ninth position, relegating Esteban Ocon to tenth place.
The big winner of the weekend is Nico Hülkenberg, who, with his fifth place in Spain, has gained four positions in the drivers’ standings. He now finds himself ahead of Stroll (P12), Sainz (P13), Gasly (P14), and Tsunoda (P15).
For his twenty-second season, and thanks to his 9th place finish at home in Spain, Fernando Alonso finally opens his account by scoring 2 points and occupies the 18th place in the drivers’ standings. Finally, it should be noted that Gabriel Bortoleto and Franco Colapinto are at the bottom of the standings and have still not scored any points.
Constructor ranking
With four teams beyond the 100 points mark and six remaining below the 55 threshold after the Spanish GP, the 2025 championship is shaping up to be a two-speed confrontation, dominated by a firmly established “Big Four” and a pack relegated to a good distance.
McLaren, far ahead… and alone in the world
With 362 points, McLaren is leading the championship. The British team has a colossal lead of 197 points over Ferrari, its closest rival. It’s simple: the Woking team has gathered 37% of all the points distributed since the start of the season!
Always in the lead since the first race in Australia, McLaren not only maintained its position in Spain, but also consolidated it with a consistency and performance that its rivals can no longer match.
Ferrari rebounds, Mercedes and Red Bull regress
At the end of the Spanish Grand Prix, with both its cars in the points, Scuderia Ferrari gains two places in the constructors’ championship. It thus surpasses Mercedes and Red Bull and is now in second place with 165 points. This performance rekindles Ferrari’s battle for the podium.
Mercedes and Red Bull in decline.
The result of the Spanish race has a negative impact on Mercedes (159 points) and especially on Red Bull (144 points), with each losing a place in the standings. Red Bull, with a second car still very difficult to drive, is now trailing McLaren by 218 points: a significant and unimaginable gap just a few months ago.
The Mid-field and the bottom of the plateau
Behind the leading quartet, Williams remains in 5th position with 54 points. The rest of the pack is tight: Racing Bulls (28 points) and Haas (26 points) are jostling for sixth place, with a slight advantage for Red Bull’s sister team after gaining a position against Haas.
The great performance of Niko Hülkenberg in Catalonia allows Kick Sauber to gain two positions and tie with Aston Martin in 8th place (each with 16 points), in addition to surpassing Alpine (11 points) which is now last in the standings.
