Canadian Grand Prix – Free Practice 2: Can Mercedes go for victory?

Are Mercedes on the ball in Montreal? In any case, by finishing 1st and 3rd, George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli appear confident with their single-seaters on the Gilles Villeneuve track. The Williams are also performing well.

Lewis Hamilton was the only Mercedes driver to leave the pit lane for this second free practice session. The Briton’s teammate hit the barriers at the entrance of turn 3. The seven-time world champion wasn’t the only driver to feel a bit lonely. Fernando Alonso also had to gather data alone for Aston Martin after Lance Stroll was forced to retire in front of his local supporters after just a few minutes of the session. The Canadian driver hit the walls outside of turn 7. Despite the contact, which did not appear particularly severe visually, the front left suspension of the Aston Martin tore off almost instantly. Stroll was therefore forced to abandon his car near a safety post.

Relatively discreet during the first free practice session, the McLarens did not start the session in the best way. On a few occasions, Piastri and Norris encountered difficulties in getting their MCL39 through the final chicane. Both drivers were forced to use the runoff area due to excessive understeer on entry.

Alexander Albon had a slight scare by placing his left wheels on the grass near the braking zone. The Thai driver also decided to go through the run-off areas to abort his lap. Mistakes must be avoided at Williams, where the car seems to have the pace to aim for another very strong result in Canada. Big points would come at the perfect time after a complicated weekend in Barcelona.

Exactly as during FP1, Franco Colapinto lost the rear of his car coming out of the second corner. These low-speed spins indicate a driver struggling with his machine. The Alpines did not show promising signs at the end of this Friday. Despite Gasly’s 9th fastest time in the first session, the blue and pink cars have little chance of scoring points on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit.

Fastest time during FP1, Max Verstappen didn’t feel as comfortable behind the wheel of his Red Bull during FP2, notably complaining about less effective brakes. This discomfort was reflected in the times, with the Dutchman only setting the 9th fastest lap.

Last year, George Russell came close to victory. By finishing this FP2 as the fastest man of the day, George Russell is putting all the odds in his favor to go for his first victory this season. However, be aware of overconfidence and the discreetness of the McLarens, who might be hiding their game until the last moment.
