F1 returns to its historic cradle for the 12th round of the 2025 season. Lando Norris, winner in Austria, can close the gap on Oscar Piastri and even take the lead in the championship in front of his British crowd. The weather could play an important role with chances of showers on Sunday. Here’s what you need to know to not miss anything this weekend.

Norris on a quest to reclaim his territory

Lando Norris arrives at Silverstone with strengthened ambitions after his victory in Austria. The McLaren driver has reduced his championship deficit to 15 points against his teammate Oscar Piastri, turning the title race into an internal affair at McLaren. A home victory would allow the Briton to come within eight points of the leader, or even take the lead if his teammate finishes sixth or lower.

Moreover, Norris has never won his home Grand Prix despite his remarkable performances in recent seasons. The occasion is ideal for clinching a first victory at Silverstone and securing two consecutive wins for the first time in his career. But one thing is certain, Piastri will battle to remain the championship leader.

McLaren dominates unchallenged

With 417 points on the board, McLaren now has a 207-point lead over Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship. The Woking team has won eight out of eleven races, including four one-two finishes, confirming its overwhelming dominance this season.

Ferrari occupies second place with 210 points, leading Mercedes by one point, which has 209 points. This close fight for the second spot on the constructors’ podium adds excitement to this British Grand Prix.

Fourth with 162 points, Red Bull is struggling to establish itself sustainably in the race for the constructors’ title. The car, less performant than in previous years, relies heavily on Max Verstappen to score points, as his teammates have so far struggled to tame the car and deliver results.

Hamilton still in search of a podium with Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton competes in his first British Grand Prix with Ferrari. The seven-time world champion holds the record for victories at Silverstone with nine wins and is on a remarkable streak of twelve consecutive podiums at this circuit since 2014. However, the Brit has yet to climb onto a podium with Ferrari after eleven races. If he doesn’t finish in the top 3 on Sunday, he will lose his British record.

The former Mercedes driver has 91 points in the drivers’ championship, which is 28 less than his teammate Charles Leclerc, who seems to better understand the SF-25 despite his issues. A podium finish at home would therefore represent an important psychological turning point for Hamilton and could revive his collaboration with the Italian team.

Verstappen on the rebound

Max Verstappen heads to Silverstone 63 points behind Piastri after his off-track excursion on the first lap in Austria. The Dutchman was hit by Kimi Antonelli in the first corner, compromising his hopes of victory on the Red Bull circuit. This mishap further complicates the task for the three-time world champion in the title race.

The Red Bull champion will compete in the British Grand Prix with two penalty points removed, reducing the risk of suspension. He will need to deliver a flawless performance in the upcoming races to have a chance at returning to the title fight, a considerable challenge given the consistency of McLaren.

A distinguished line-up with the F4

Silverstone is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the first Formula 1 Grand Prix held in 1950 this year. On this occasion, British Formula 4 joins the program alongside F2 and F3, marking the first time all three junior categories come together during an F1 weekend.

This exceptional lineup highlights the British up-and-comers, including notably Thomas Bearman, younger brother of Ollie Bearman, among the drivers to watch.

British weather expected

True to its reputation, Silverstone could experience changing conditions this weekend. While Friday’s free practice sessions are expected to be dry with temperatures of 23°C, rain threatens for Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s race. Thunderstorms remain possible over the 52 laps of the race, adding an extra factor of unpredictability.

The 5.9-kilometer circuit, with its iconic fast corners like Copse, Maggotts-Becketts, and Stowe, promises an intense spectacle in front of nearly 500,000 spectators expected over the entire weekend.

The sessions of the British Grand Prix will be broadcast live on Canal+ (France), TIPIK and Auvio (Belgium), and RTS (Switzerland). All schedules can be found below.
