Charles Leclerc surprised but delighted with 3rd place in qualifying
The Ferrari driver will start behind the two McLaren drivers but ahead of Max Verstappen.
Never forget Charles Leclerc during a qualifying session! Although he doesn’t yet have a car capable of competing with the formidable McLarens, the Monegasque driver managed to pull off a lap that allows him to be the “best of the rest” at Spa.
« We were expecting to be fourth. The gap is still significant with the lead but less than I thought. I’m very happy, it’s a good step forward » said the Ferrari driver in a press conference after the session.
The Scuderia is bringing a major upgrade to its car this weekend with a new rear suspension. Although it does not yet allow its drivers to compete for pole positions and victories, Leclerc believes it is a step in the right direction.
« Our developments are moving in the right direction. The whole team on the track and at the factory are working hard and it’s starting to pay off. We need to confirm race after race that our developments are working. Grip is very important here, so let’s see how it goes on other circuits. »
The risk of rain will be higher tomorrow for the race than during the qualifying session this Saturday. While he thinks he can compete for a spot on the podium, Leclerc does not see himself as a contender for the win.
« Am I going to be able to fight for victory during the race? It will be very difficult. I still hope that the guys in front will see me in their mirrors for as long as possible. »
The start of the race will be given tomorrow, Sunday, at 3 PM.
