Belgian Grand Prix: Piastri wins at Spa, Norris misses out at the start
Oscar Piastri won the Belgian Grand Prix after taking advantage of a restart error by Lando Norris. The Australian consolidated his lead in the drivers' championship with victory at Spa-Francorchamps, McLaren's sixth one-two finish of the season. Charles Leclerc completes the podium.
Oscar Piastri won the Belgian Grand Prix after a race disrupted by weather conditions. The Australian from McLaren took advantage of a mistake by his teammate Lando Norris at the restart to break away and control the race until the checkered flag. This victory allows Piastri to retake the lead in the drivers’ championship with a 16-point advantage.
Chaotic start under Safety Car
The anticipated rain poured down on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit from the early hours of Sunday morning. Visibility conditions quickly deteriorated, forcing race control to suspend the start procedure after the formation lap.
The drivers waited more than an hour before restarting behind the safety car. Hamilton, Antonelli, Alonso, and Sainz, initially penalized by starting from the pit lane after power unit changes, ultimately benefited from this particular situation.
In the fifth lap, the race finally began. Norris, starting from pole position, tried to accelerate too early before the final chicane. This haste cost him dearly: Piastri took advantage by overtaking him on the outside on the climb up Eau Rouge.
