At the beginning of the 2024 season, Max Verstappen’s father had publicly led the revolt against Christian Horner, calling for his dismissal and claiming that the Milton Keynes team risked being torn apart under his leadership.

This outing followed a complaint by an employee for inappropriate behavior by the Briton, which had led to a climate of internal warfare between two factions within the team.

Although he survived this media storm—cleared following an internal investigation—he was ultimately removed from his operational duties earlier this month. He was replaced with immediate effect by Laurent Mekies, a former executive at Ferrari, the FIA, and Racing Bulls, seen as a more unifying and calming figure.

It remains to be seen whether this reorganization will be enough to convince Max Verstappen and his entourage, notably his father, to stay with Red Bull until the end of his current contract in 2028.

Nico Rosberg pushes Jos Verstappen to break his silence on this departure

Questioned by Sky TV about his feelings on the recent changes at Red Bull following the arrival of Laurent Mekies, Jos Verstappen responded: « Well, they decided to change. I’m fine with everything. »

When asked again about his past criticisms of Christian Horner, the 53-year-old Dutchman responded diplomatically: « That was a year and a half ago. It’s different now. I have nothing to say. Everything is fine. »

When Nico Rosberg insisted by saying « now, you stay silent », Verstappen Sr simply replied: « I am always silent. »

Persistent rumors in the paddock suggested that Max Verstappen’s close circle — including his father — may have played a role in the sidelining of Christian Horner.

Now led by a new team principal, the Red Bull team will have to reassure his 4 times world champion about the stability of the project.

The chances of Max staying with Red Bull beyond 2025 seem to be increasing. On the Mercedes side, Toto Wolff has reaffirmed his confidence in George Russell and the young Kimi Antonelli, denying that his interest in Max Verstappen was a ploy to bring down Christian Horner.
