We have just learned that Vitantonio Liuzzi has lost his 8th place point from the Japan Grand Prix, and consequently the first point of the season for his team.
The Scuderia Toro Rosso driver had overtaken Adrian Sutil under the yellow flag, and the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) announced that it was withdrawing Liuzzi’s only point of the season.
But as you know, one person’s misfortune is another’s happiness, which is why it’s naturally Adrian Sutil who clinches the point for 8th place, having finished 9th in the race behind Liuzzi, thereby earning the Spyker team its first point.
Adrian Sutil comments on this decision:
“We deserved the 8th place point because we worked very hard throughout the season. It’s an immense joy for the team and for me, even though I would have preferred to score this first point by racing on a circuit.”
Colin Kolles, the president of Spyker, added:
“I am happy that the FIA ruled in our favor because we had clearly seen Vitantonio overtaking Adrian under the yellow flag. This decision gave us our first point in the championship, and I am very proud of it. Sutil truly deserved this point after an exemplary race.”
“It’s also a very good thing for everyone’s morale at Spyker, the whole team has really worked hard this season. We look forward to China and hope to regularly achieve this appearance in the points.”
Nevertheless, the Toro Rosso team immediately announced their intention to appeal this decision. The matter will therefore be settled in court.
