Fernando Alonso declared on Monday that he would be delighted if he didn’t have to be Lewis Hamilton’s teammate again in 2008. This comes after Hamilton, close to his first title, repeatedly expressed his desire for Alonso to leave McLaren at the end of the season. The 26-year-old Spaniard confirmed on the airwaves of the Cadena SER radio station that he is ready to fulfill this desire.

« I would be delighted if I didn’t continue the role of teammate with Hamilton. If we’re not together next season, I could, with a good car, compete freely against him. If we have to continue together, we will struggle to hide this rivalry. »

At Ferrari, the possibilities are contractually nil for next year, so Renault has bounced back and has become the most likely option for a possible contract with Alonso. And this is only if and only if he manages to obtain a release from his contract by boss Ron Dennis.

Flavio Briatore no longer hides his desire to reunite the French team and Alonso, saying on Monday in the columns of an Italian sports newspaper that it would be « stupid » to deny it.

« Nowadays, it is important that the roles of number one and number two are clear, otherwise you risk destabilizing the team. If you hire a world champion, then you must give them the number one spot in line with their status. » he added.
